Dr Ben Butwong | Mediren Clinic, Thailand
Spex Review of Dr Ben Butwong for Thai Hair Transplants
Finding the right hair transplant surgeon is one of the most important decisions any patient will make. After spending more than twenty five years speaking with hair loss sufferers around the world and for the last 20 visiting clinics across Europe, North America and Asia, I have learnt that technical ability is only one part of the equation. Experience, ethics, communication and consistency matter just as much. My recent visit to Guangzhou, China, for the FUE Global World Congress provided the opportunity to spend time with one of Thailand’s most respected hair restoration surgeons, Dr Ben Butwong. It reinforced why she has earned an international reputation for combining surgical precision with a genuine patient-first philosophy.

Disclosure: I personally paid to attend the FUE Global World Congress in China, where I was invited to deliver a keynote presentation on trust and patient advocacy. I sincerely appreciate the invitation to speak and the opportunity to meet Dr Ben Butwong and colleagues from around the world.

Who is Dr Ben Butwong?
Dr Ben Butwong is the Founder and Medical Director of Mediren Clinic in Thailand and has dedicated more than fifteen years to advancing the field of hair restoration surgery. Her practice focuses on delivering natural hairlines, meticulous graft placement and personalised treatment planning rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach. She has also become widely recognised throughout Asia for her expertise in Long Hair FUE, female hair transplantation and complex repair procedures. Her commitment to education extends beyond the operating theatre through international teaching, conference presentations and collaboration with surgeons worldwide.
My Visit to China and Meeting Dr Ben
One of the highlights of attending the FUE Global World Congress in Guangzhou was the opportunity to meet with Dr Ben and observe the respect she commands among colleagues from across the world. The congress brought together leading surgeons, researchers and innovators to discuss advances in:
- FUE surgery
- Regenerative medicine
- Medical hair loss treatments
- Hair disorders
- Future technologies shaping hair restoration
Dr Ben’s willingness to openly share knowledge and collaborate with fellow physicians perfectly reflects the direction I believe this industry should continue moving towards. Education, transparency and putting patients first.

Exclusive Hair Loss Lab Interview
During our time together, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr Ben for an exclusive interview for The Hair Loss Lab Podcast. Rather than simply discussing procedures, we explored:
- Her journey into hair restoration
- What separates good results from exceptional results
- The importance of natural hairline design
- Long Hair FUE and female hair transplantation
- Patient expectations and ethical consultation
- The future of regenerative hair medicine

Why Dr Ben Stands Out – After visiting clinics around the world, several characteristics consistently stand out among surgeons I respect. Dr Ben demonstrates many of these qualities.
Patient First Philosophy – Every treatment plan begins with understanding the individual rather than simply discussing graft numbers.
Natural Results – Hair restoration should complement facial characteristics, age and long term planning rather than chase density alone.
International Education – Dr Ben actively contributes to international conferences and educational events, sharing knowledge with colleagues and helping elevate standards throughout Asia.
Attention to Detail – From consultation through surgery and aftercare, the emphasis is on precision and consistency.

Dr Ben Butwon & Mediren Clinic Costs
Mediren Clinic doesn’t publish fixed prices in English, which is normal for Thai clinics as quotes are individual, arranged through the clinic after email or a photo assessment. Based on the Thai market and the calibre of surgeon, expect a meaningful saving against Western European surgeon-led clinics, where comparable surgeons charge €3–5 per graft. Thailand’s advantage compounds on large cases, a 4,000–6,000 graft plan that could run well past €15,000 in Europe typically comes in dramatically lower, even after flights and a week’s accommodation in Bangkok.
Is she good value? For large sessions, female cases and Long Hair FUE, genuinely, yes: you’re getting a conference-lecturing, board-certified surgeon at Thai pricing. For small cases, run the maths including travel before deciding. Whatever quote you receive, it should itemise graft count, technique, who performs extractions and incisions, all follow-up, and medication. If any of that is vague, ask again before paying a deposit.
It is also worth noting that currently the Meridan Clinic are offering discounts from 10-50% depending on case complexity as well. With special care and consideration being considered to younger patients, LGBTQ+ patients, first time transplant cases with 0 previous damage, and other suitable cases.
Mediren Clinic Patient Clinic Reviews

Mediren Clinic holds a 5.0 rating on Google across 33 reviews and having read through them, the consistency is what we look for when assessing clinic reviews. Three themes come up repeatedly across the reviews: Dr Ben operates herself. Multiple patients specifically highlight that Dr Ben personally performs the procedure rather than delegating to technicians, something that matters enormously if you are considering making the trip to the clinic.
One patient notes she “provides advice, assessments, and performs the procedure herself.” Another, on his second visit to the clinic, confirms the same standard held across both procedures. The consultation sets the tone. Reviewers consistently describe their first consultation as unhurried and thorough, staff and doctor answering every question without rushing, making patients feel confident before surgery even begins. One reviewer describes researching extensively before choosing Mediren for a complex case involving fine hair and a large transplant area.
We recommend you check out the reviews for yourself and come to your own conclusion, but the clinics online reputation is definitely on the positive side.
Why Independent Research Matters
One of the core principles behind SpexHair has always been education before surgery. No patient should choose a clinic based purely on advertising, social media followers or discounted pricing. Instead, I encourage every prospective patient to:
- Review multiple patient journeys
- Understand both benefits and limitations
- Speak directly with previous patients
- Compare consultation experiences
- Learn about medical treatment before considering surgery
A well informed patient almost always makes better decisions.
Is Dr Ben Butwong Right for You?
Dr Ben’s practice is built around FUE in all its modern forms, and two things genuinely set her apart. The first is Long Hair FUE, transplanting without shaving the recipient or donor hair down, so patients walk out without the tell-tale shaved-head recovery period. She doesn’t just perform this; she trains other surgeons across Asia in the technique. The second is megasession capability. Her clinic has documented single-session cases of 6,000 grafts, which very few surgeons anywhere will attempt in one sitting.
She’s best suited for: advanced hair loss (Norwood 4–6) where large sessions make more sense. And for female patients as a female surgeon with a dedicated female hair transplant practice, she’s an obvious choice for women who find most clinics male-oriented.
Every patient is different. Age, donor characteristics, hair loss progression, expectations and long term planning all influence whether a surgeon is the right fit.
If you are considering travelling to Thailand for a hair transplant and value natural results, personalised care and an internationally recognised surgeon with a strong educational focus, Dr Ben Butwong is certainly worth researching further.
