Patient to Advocate: My Mission to Redefine Trust in the Hair Restoration Industry
4 min read
The hair restoration world has evolved dramatically in recent years — new technologies, global demand, and countless treatment options have transformed the space. But with this progress has come confusion, misinformation, and far too many vulnerable patients being sold false hope. That’s where I come in. I’m Spencer “Spex” Stevenson, founder and CEO of SpexHair.com — and more importantly, a long-time patient advocate who’s spent over two decades navigating this industry firsthand. Having personally undergone 13 hair transplant surgeries — some successful, others disastrous — I’ve experienced both sides of the scalpel. My mission is to make sure no one else has to learn the hard way like I did.Through SpexHair, I’ve built one of the world’s most trusted educational platforms for people struggling with hair loss. My goal is simple: to bring clarity, ethics, and transparency to an industry too often clouded by marketing hype.

- A Mission Rooted in Advocacy and Integrity
Every collaboration I take on is selective and meaningful.
- I only partner with ethical clinics that share my patient-first values.
- I work closely with respected organisations such as the IAHRS and American Hair Loss Association.
- I’ve joined forces with JAAQ and Spencer Kobren’s The Bald Truth UK to fight misinformation and support education.
- I proudly work with GroMD, DENSE Hair Experts, Advanced Trichology, and Ape to Gentleman, promoting science-backed, ethical solutions.
Each alliance reinforces the same principle that defines my work: trust through education, not sales.
Real Results That Go Beyond Surgery
One of my most rewarding experiences involved a young man in his early twenties who was moments away from booking a cheap transplant abroad. He had been told he was a “perfect candidate.” When he reached out to me, I advised against surgery. His hair loss wasn’t stable, and his donor area hadn’t been properly evaluated — surgery would have been a lifetime mistake. Instead, I guided him toward a non-surgical plan — medical treatments like finasteride, oral minoxidil, and GroMD shampoo to stabilise his loss. Two years later, his hair thickened, his confidence returned, and he never needed surgery. That’s what drives me. My mission isn’t to count grafts — it’s to protect patients from unnecessary procedures and empower them with the information they deserve.

Recognition Through Honesty and Experience
Over the years, my work has been recognised globally. I’ve been featured in The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Times, GQ, Esquire, Men’s Health, and Bloomberg, and appeared on BBC News, BBC Radio 5 Live, ITV, and more — often sharing my journey as both a patient and advocate. I also co-hosted the UK version of The Bald Truth, providing live, honest guidance to thousands of listeners. That transparency has earned me the trust of both patients and professionals — because I speak from lived experience, not sales scripts.
Why I Built SpexHair
When I first started SpexHair, I asked myself: “Who am I to educate others?” I wasn’t a doctor or clinic owner — just a patient who’d been through it all. But that perspective became my biggest strength. I understood what patients needed most: truth, empathy, and practical guidance. Today, SpexHair is recognised by leading industry bodies and has reached millions of people worldwide. It’s a platform that helps men and women make informed, confident decisions about their hair restoration journey. As Dr. Alan Bauman once said, “Spencer became a beacon of light in an industry that desperately needed one.” That’s something I take immense pride in. My success has never been about being the loudest voice — it’s about being the most authentic one. Every article, interview, and patient conversation reflects the same mission: to protect, educate, and empower.
